Quality vs Quantity education

Yea yea ...this friday akan sampai kat Kl and saturday plak nak ronggeng ngan family fendu ...very looking forward to it! Just thinking about the upcoming meeting with Fendfid and misha, and a short break to Cameron Highlands with my family sedikit sebanyak telah berjaya mengurangkan api kemarahan aku ari nie ...

It's a long story ...but the short version was while marking students' assignment i found ada 6 org student memberikan jawapan yang meragukan i.e. 100% sebijik sama ...so, tau lah depa tu menipu. But paling tak tahan, one pair nie had the cheeck to photocopy her friend's answer and just tempekkan cover page yang ada nama dia ...yup, membara le ati aku ...ingat aku nie buta ke apa ...i called them up and they all fessed up ...but the two yang photocopy tu siap berkeras kata they dont deserve to get 0 (telor!) from me sebab mereka buat kerja ...i guess they consider pergi kedai photocopy and tempekkan cover page itu sebagai satu kerja yang deserve 100% for effort kot ...well, i gave them 0% for that, but definitely 100% for stupidity ....yea lah kalau nak tipu pun, pandai le sket ...don't get caught ...nie, terang2 nak menegakkan benang yang basah ...

My question is why are we allowing these lazybums to enrol in a uni? Dah terang2 ada peluang to do well, tapi disia2kan ...i am blaming the system yang make it easy for students nowadays to get into uni ...and sampai fail form 3 pun boleh masuk form 4 ke atas ...apa kes???? because nak sangat pentingkan quantity, sampai quality tergadai ...sapa nak jawap? nanti bila dah graduate, diorang nie lah yang akan bangga dengan achievement mereka - but achievement tu - adakah ianya setimpal dengan ijazah yang dianugerahkan? and we often heard about employers kata their staff tidak pandai buat kerja, takde soft skills etc etc ...who is to blame???

Tak cukup ngan itu, private college plak ditukar status uni, and private colleges bagai cendawan tumbuh selepas hujan...student berlumba2 nak masuk ...are they uni-material??? Bukan apa, aku kenal 2-3 org yang masuk private college and after 5-6 years kat sama pun masih tak grad lagi ...why? always fail, and tukar2 course ...so, what does it say???

and bila dah start ngajor maths and science in english, tak sampai 10 tahun, dah nak tukar - why? untuk memperkasakan BM - yea, i am all for that but tak fikir ke the benefits that our children are getting?? kata globalized country, globalized era, dunia tanpa sempadan - how are they going to cope kalau english pun berterabur??? for science major - reference byk in english kan - its a win win situation. lagipun bukannya membelakangkan BM pun, BM still is the official language, still is the medium in schools ...

I am definitely supporting the idea to limit the number of student masuk uni ...biar quantity sket tapi yang dihasilkan adalah org yang berkualiti ...this is a viewpoint of a lecturer, of course. I felt that the quality semakin turun...students expect to be spoonfed all the time ...mintak copy of notes/presentation slides from lecturer instead of salin notes like i did years ago ...dont get me wrong, yang ok tu mmg ok - very independent and intelligent ..and able to cope with the pressure of uni life ...but the majority to kekadang seem to be terumbang ambing - lack of focus, lack initiative ...

sorilah kekawan, aku dah melalut nie...bukan apa...geram sesangat ngan perangai students2 nie ...dah ada peluang tapi tak hargainya ...kiter pun pernah merasa what they rasa kan ...but i think we did well, masa enjoy kiter enjoy, but masa belajar, kite belajar...right? Since masing2 ada anak ...kiter fikir2kan lah what the future of education di sini will be like....

ejin... that "copy-paste-plagiarize" incident, happened to me last year. heh, at first dowan to confess, siap cakap arrogantly... "prove it!"... gler hangin le aku, i was holding a big dictionary at that time. bergegar my table when i hempas that big-red-book. nak tau how not-so-intelligent they were? they plagiarize directly from the one and only module that me, them & the rest of the students yg amik course tu, gunakan.

tadik pun, sama kes not-so-intelligent. this week & next week, the students will be delivering their final speech. this 1 student talked about "underage drinking"... tapi kan...
"I did my research on this topic & the result, all 50 states bla... bla... bla..."
50 states?
since when malaysia ada 50 states?
her friends memang terpinga2 before some of them, tergelak.
pastu, throughout the speech, dok sebut 50 states a few times. tapi guna "I did this...", "I did that..."
itu belum masuk yg mispronounce words. kot yg pelik2 takpe la. ini basic words. Heart = /hurt/, waist = /wise/, airplane = /airplan/, month = /munth/...
11 years of learning basic & intermediate English... down the drain aje.

when lecturers are talking/discussing...kita jangan masuk campur. ingat pesanan penaja ni kak long. dok diam diam makan coklat...he he he

fening becoz not that we didn't remind them "tak tahu, tanye"... but some are just too arrogant too ask or saje-nak-tunjuk-pandai-tapi-sebenornye-tak-pandai case. many yg tanya are the ones yg memang pandai dah... that's why yg pandai semakin pandai, yang kureng pandai semakin tak pandai. "agree or not?"

mard, selalu tak dapat excuse "laptop rosak, tak dpt antor assignment on time??"

and yes, mmg i agree bila ngko kata org yang malas bertanya tu, either malu or buat2 pandai padahal tak pandai ....tapi kalau diam aku tak kisah, yang arrogant tu aku paling tak tahan ...perasan betol plak tu!

pesanan dipatuhi pak fend! tapi aku kan big mounth nak lah cakap sikit...about the using of english for maths and science....i also just dont understand the need to revert to bm again and all that fuss...satu menteri masuk nak tukar kang satu lagi masuk tukar lagi...what are they doing. If you need to make any changes at all, do research a proper one bukan sebab being pressured terus kelam kabut gelabah semacam....after all yg payah nya science aje and it starts at std 4 kan...so the first 3 years tu cikgu should be able to teach basic understanding.

betul kata liz ...bila org lain take over satu portfolio, dandan tukar policy ...bukan nak tengok policy to ok ke idak ...ikut hati dan perasaan betol ..mcm duration of uni courses tu ...kejap 3 tahun, then uban to 4 year, before org yang masuk tu sempat grad, ubah lagi to 3 years ...camne nie? lecturers jugak pening, nak cram sana sini ...nak tgk mana subjek yang patut ada, mana yang kena trim down ...quality ke mana? hampeh!

sbb yg jadik menteri, bukan orang education pun. orang PTD. so diorang bukan really tau actual education prob. yg diorang tau, nak naik kan "nama" diorang. In the end, yg kecik2 ni la jadik mangsa (students & teachers & parents)

not just education je...
department lain pun camtu gak.

ha, so now if i visit you, bawak famous amos ok gak kan? tak yah le cool water ke...hehehe
